A Leader in Robotic Gynecologic Surgery
Dr. James Maly has been a leader in bringing robotic surgery to Lincoln, NE. Over two decades ago he received specialized training on the DaVinci surgical robot and was the first physician in the state to perform gynecologic robotic surgeries at Bryan Medical Center. During a robotic procedure, a surgeon sits at a control panel in the corner of the operating room and uses hand levers to maneuver robotic arms under optimal magnification and lighting conditions. This increases surgical accuracy and reduces complications, resulting in a shorter length of stay for patients and less reliance on pain management medications. Dr. Maly continued to be a leader in robotic surgeries when he was the first physician in the area to perform a single incision laparoscopic hysterectomy with the DaVinci robot at Bryan in 2013.
Bringing the Future of Surgery to Patients in Nebraska
On February 20, 2025, Dr. James Maly once again made history as the first physician in Nebraska to perform a case using the NEW DaVinci 5 system. The procedure lasted about an hour and was a success. Dr. Maly has now performed a case using each generation of DaVinci surgical robot at Bryan.
“It’s been such a gift to be able to use this type of technology over the past two decades to care for patients,” said Dr. Maly. “Bryan has been very engaged and stepped up to add these kinds of services. I’ve always been a strong advocate for robotic surgery because of how it benefits our patients and feel it will continue to be an important part of surgical care in the future.”
The DaVinci 5 surgical system, designed by Intuitive, was approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) last year. It allows surgeons to perform a wide variety of minimally invasive procedures, including general, gynecologic, urologic and thoracic surgeries.

Colposcopy
Colposcopy is a procedure that is used to examine the cervix for any abnormalities. A magnifying tool called a colposcope is used to visualize the cervix. A biopsy of any potential abnormalities may or may not be taken during the procedure.
